This is a low or high speed timed event. Most are low-speed (typically kept to less than 85 mph at peak speeds and usually much lower) and are held in area parking lots, airport runways or go-cart tracks. High-speed events are those exceeding 85 mph, and are held almost always on full-blown race tracks, such as Gateway International Speedway's road course. At all autocross events the competitors are going up against the clock, and as such there is usually only two or three vehicles on course at a time, and those are well spaced for safety. This is not wheel-to-wheel racing such as would be seen in NASCAR or ALMS. In low-speed autocrosses, a "course" is set up using small orange traffic cones and will include tight turns, short straights, slaloms and hairpins. The goal is to travel the course as quickly as possible without upsetting any cones. Upset cones incur time penalties, and bypassing an obstacle results in no time scored. Boone Trail Corvette Club typically hosts three to four low-speed events each year, and several members participate in events hosted by other clubs throughout the region, including occasional high-speed events held at Gateway International Raceway and others throughout the Mid-West. An autocross is an excellent way to improve driving skills and learn the limits of you and your Corvette in a safe, in-expensive, fun-filled way. Every effort is made to minimize risk to you, your car and spectators. |
